How long is the rabies vaccine effective?
I was bitten by a stray dog 6 months ago and got shots for rabies vaccine. I have now again been bitten by a 2-month-old pup while playing with it. The wound isn’t too deep but it bled a little. I was wondering about the effective period for rabies vaccine. Should I get the rabies vaccine shots again?

If you have completed your complete rabies vaccine shot You will need only 2 boosters. However if you haven’t then you will need to take the entire course of 5 doses of the vaccine. After complete course only boosters are required when bitten. If the pup is a domesticated dog and is up to date with its rabies vaccination you need not worry. Keep an eye on the dog for behavioural changes of the dog or deterioration in health or death, in case of any of these noted head to your Doctor immediately. Make sure you wash the wound immediately with clean water and soap to reduce risk of infection and head for the booster within 3 days. Rabies vaccine/ booster should be taken within 3 days of being bitten .
Next Steps
If you have completed the 5 dose course you will need two boosters only. If you haven’t then take the 5 dose course.
