How effective is it?
I have had on and off depressive and anxiety episode from last 5 year. I also had been on medication in intervals for this reason. Medicines include nexito forte, rexipra forte, prodep 20. Recently again I have been diagnosed with depression and anxiety. I keep getting these problems in episodic manner. The psychiatrist I consulted said you have recurring episodic depression and anxiety (something like this). Currently I am on nexito 10 and lonazep md. He suggest me to get counselling sessions with a psychologist as this is a recurring thing. Medicine will help but for a temporary period of time. I know counselling can be effective but my question is how 'permanent' is the benefits I'll get from counselling. Is it a 'permanent' solution? P.s - I always try to stay fit. I exercise regularly and often do yoga and meditation. I used to smoke but I have quit since a year. I drink occasionally once a month (just a beer or 2) and always try to eat a healthy diet.

Depression & anxiety is a challenging cocktail. Psychotherapy helps in discovering the root cause of depression and anxiety. Knowing the root cause and treating it will DEFINITELY get permanent results . Counselling is a two way road . Understanding each other and following the tips ,can give super results. Results are very subjective ,as it depends person to person . It's worth a try , please be open minded when you take your counseling sessions I strongly recommend psychotherapy.

1.Use Deep Breathing Deep breathing is another effective way to relieve stress and anxiety. It helps you with physical symptoms such as shallow breathing and rapid heart rate, and it also helps with controlling your thoughts. When you practice deep breathing, you're forced to take your thoughts off of whatever is causing you anxiety and to focus on the breathing technique that you are using. 2.Keep A Journal Journaling can be an effective way to deal with your anxiety and to find relief. It helps you to take all of the things that are rolling around in your head and get them out of your head and down on paper. Sometimes seeing the things that we're worried about on paper can help us to see that they're not as big of a deal as we thought they were. It can also help us to find solutions that we have been overlooking. 3.Hang Out With Friends If you're struggling with anxiety, sometimes the last thing that you want to do is go hang out with your friends. Even if it's an activity that you enjoy with people that you like, the thought of it can be stressful. Your brain already feels overwhelmed with things that you feel you need to figure out, and it can seem like a bad use of time to do something fun. 4. Exercise, Find What Works For You : You might be tired of hearing about how great exercise is for your health. But, the reason you hear about it so much is that there's no way around it. Exercise it's good for both your physical body and for your mind.Getting regular exercise has been proven to help you sleep better at night, clear your head, and boost your mood. It's a great way to use up all that pent-up energy that you have in a way that's going to benefit you in multiple areas of your life.

Greetings Sir! It is true that Depression and Anxiety, like any chronic condition, can relapse, that is, return or flare up after a period of remission. Even though, pharmacological treatment is at times, very necessary and beneficial; it may only be of symptomatic relief. That is, acting like a painkiller, and may not help in addressing the 'cause' or 'why' of the source of your depressive and anxious thoughts. Therefore, Counselling and Therapeutic work would help in understanding what situations if any trigger your stress response, how you can see it from an objective lens, and manage your response to stressful situations so that the difficulty does not lead to pathology, that is, in your case-Depression and/or Anxiety.
Next Steps
It would be very wise to seek regular Therapy in-adjunct to your medicinal intervention.
Health Tips
Remember this analogy: Crocin would only make the headache go away for a while, but if it returns, we need to address and understand why is it happening at the first place.

Hi... To answer your question, let me make is more simpler to you. Is there any exercise or gym or training that can keep you fit for whole life, even when you stop doing it and eat whatever you want and sleep whenever you want? Same goes with Psychotherapy/Counselling. Its ultimate purpose is to bring change from within. So that even when the therapy stops the change that it has brought, remains. But it is long term process. Therapies usually last for 6-8 months to 1-2 years or more (in severe mental disorders). Lot of people either never cross this phase that you are currently in or they leave the therapy half way. It is not allopathy. It doesn't treat the symptoms. It is meant to treat the issues from the root. It is more a relationship (therapeutic) that heals more than just suggestions, analysis, or approaches.
Next Steps
Consult a Psychologist. CBT along with Psycho education and Lifestyle Guidance is required.
