First of all your lipid profile should be complete comprising LDL,HDl,VLDL along with total cholesterol n preferably fbs n ppbs also to give any concrete suggestion. If ur sugars n bp are in control,n ldl below 130 n HDL above 45 then only exercise or even walking for more than 30 minutes for five days in a day should be sufficient along with some restrictions on carbohydrates laden food n fatty foods.
Next Steps
Get lipid profile, thyroid profile n blood sugars done, along with BMI n ur bp readings

Hi, the first will always be diet and lifestyle changes ; medication is the last step. Start regular exercise 30minutes aerobic exercise everyday with diet rich in fresh vegetable fresh fruits fibre , reduce fat in your diet which is processed food rich in saturated fats, processed butter cheese, switch to toned milk, avoid deep fries switch to sautéed vegetables. Avoid alcohol and smoking. Statins are prescribed in very specific situations of which raised cholesterol is only one arm LDL HDL Triglycerides are the guide for prescribing medication along with history of heart attack or stroke in the past and family history of heart attack or stroke in the past. So focus on changing your lifestyle and diet and recheck your lipid profile in 6 months.

Brother excercise can improve cholesterol. Moderate physical activity can help raise high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, the "good" cholesterol. With your doctor's OK, work up to at least 30 minutes of excercise five times a week or vigorous aerobic activity for 20 minutes three times a week.
