The tooth which is painful might have a cavity and the associated infection have lead to swelling (abscess) in that area around the tooth and hence the pain. The swelling will subside only when the pus is drained out and the infection is removed by a root canal procedure followed by a course of antibiotics.
Next Steps
Root canal treatment.
