Try having a conversation with her expressing your care and concern for her without being judgmental or labeling her response as dysfunctional only with the intention of letting her vent her concerns and thereby making the burden which is weighing on her mind,lighter.

Is she going through menopause? There could be lots of mood swings during this phase.please check if any fears which she has faced in the past?
She will be fine with some counseling and therapy.
Hello thanks for your approach to us, I understand your concern, fear could be for various reasons, has she had disturbance, any thing she came to know , some negative thoughts.. her age also will trigger for thought process, leading to emotional distress.
It's better that you take the help of psychologist to guide for better situation.
If required psychiatrist s help can be taken.
