Yes — you do need post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) again, but because you have a fully completed and recent rabies vaccination course (5 doses completed in January), you only need 2 booster doses — not the full PEP course and no rabies immunoglobulin (RIG) is required. This is the standard recommendation from WHO, CDC, and Indian guidelines (National Rabies Control Programme): • Anyone who has previously received a complete pre- or post-exposure rabies vaccine series (at least 3–5 doses) and the last dose was within the past few years (your case — only ~7 days ago) is considered “previously vaccinated”. • For any new Category II or III exposure (bite with skin break or bleeding), they need only 2 booster doses: • Day 0 (as soon as possible after the bite — ideally today) • Day 3 Your immunity is still very high right now (peak antibody response occurs ~2–4 weeks after the 5th dose, and you’re only 7 days post-completion), so the boosters will trigger a rapid and strong anamnestic (memory) response — giving excellent protection.
Next Steps
1. Go to a hospital/clinic today (do not delay even one day): • Show your previous vaccination record (dates of the 5 doses in January) • Get the bite wound thoroughly washed with soap and running water for 15 minutes (even if already done) • Receive rabies vaccine booster (any modern cell-culture vaccine — Abhayrab, Rabipur, Verorab, Indirab, etc.) • Intramuscular (deltoid) or intradermal (same site as before) — both are acceptable • Day 0 dose today + Day 3 dose in 3 days 2. No RIG is needed — your recent full course makes it unnecessary and could even interfere with the booster response. 3. No need for further doses beyond the 2 boosters unless a new exposure occurs later.
Health Tips
• Wash the wound again right now if you haven’t already — soap + water for 15 minutes is the most important first step • Keep the area clean and covered; watch for signs of local infection (increasing redness, swelling, pus, fever) — if any, see doctor same day • Avoid alcohol and heavy physical activity for the next few days (minor precaution while boosters are given) • Side effects of boosters are usually mild (soreness at injection site, low fever, tiredness for 1–2 days) — paracetamol can be taken if needed You are already very well protected from your January course — the 2 boosters are just extra insurance for this new bite. You will be completely safe after completing them. No additional vaccine doses are required, thorough wound care should be done, since high levels of protective immunity are expected already because of complete vaccination taken in less than 3 months of the second bite.
