Does escitalopram have any side effects
I would like to know if escitalopram regular use has any side effects like weight gain or worsened mood problems, and if taking it even just once would mean I have to start taking it regularly. I took one 3 days ago and that day I felt good, but next day onwards I felt lower than usual (haven't taken it since that one time). I have a borderline mood disorder (therapist diagnosed) and a suspected General Anxiety Disorder (therapist suspected). I wanted to keep clonazepam on me in case of panic attacks but a psychiatrist suggested trying escitalopram to see if it makes me feel better. Since I only tried it once, I am not certain of its effects but I'd like to know these things before I start taking it on a daily basis. Kindly let me know. Thank you.

There is nothing called borderline mood disorder. There is borderline personality disorder or bipolar mood disorder. So get a proper diagnostic validity. All medications have benefits and side effects. Both should be considered during treatment. As rightly selected by your psychiatrist, escitalopram is good and safe for long term treatment. Good luck

Escitalopram is not habit-forming, and taking it once does not mean you must continue. For it to be effective, it needs to be taken consistently as prescribed. Given your symptoms of anxiety and emotional instability, this medication can be beneficial. Doctors often start at a low dose and increase gradually to minimize side effects. A short-term medication like clonazepam may sometimes be used if there is increased anxiety during the initial phase. I would advise you to consult a psychiatrist, give the medication adequate time, and stay in regular follow-up so any concerns or side effects can be addressed promptly.
Next Steps
Consult a Psychiatrist.
Health Tips
Give adequate time for medicine to show proper effect.

Escitalopram needs to be taken regularly for at least 4–6 weeks before you start noticing improvement. Taking just a single dose won’t lead to any significant change. The mood fluctuations you’re experiencing are more likely part of the underlying condition you mentioned. Escitalopram can cause side effects like weight gain in some individuals. If that is a concern, there are other SSRIs which are relatively more weight neutral. You can discuss this with your psychiatrist so they can choose a medication better suited to you. For panic attacks, clonazepam can help in the short term, but it’s not advisable to use benzodiazepines frequently due to their dependence potential. SSRIs are safer for long-term management and will help reduce panic symptoms over time.
