A crown can be placed even now..but you might need a post placement in the tooth before the crown for better strength to remaining tooth structure. This however can be ascertained only after checki ng the tooth clinically. A specialist is not always required....even a well experienced general  dentist can do the needful.

Yes there is a cap specialist PROSTHODONTIST, MDS who does the cutting procedure for placement of crown in your tooth. VIsit him or her or ask your doctor to call specialist for that procedure too. But before that please check that there is no pain, swelling or tenderness in your tooth coz if there is then you might need Re- treatment first. Get X-ray done which confirms the presence or absence of infection. Then proceed further.
Health Tips
First get X-ray done and visit your dentist.
