Hello, I am Dr. Romain Rajan, General Physician.
I understand your concern. After gut infections, it is common to develop post-infectious irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) where digestion remains sensitive for a few weeks to months. Symptoms like loose stools, mucus, occasional cramps, and a coated tongue can occur.
â Advices
⢠Eat a bland, soft diet â rice, curd, bananas, oats, boiled vegetables
⢠Avoid milk, spicy/oily food, excess tea/coffee, and packaged foods for now
⢠Stay hydrated with water, ORS, or coconut water
⢠Include probiotics or curd daily to restore gut flora
What to Monitor
⢠Frequency of stools â should gradually reduce over time
⢠Appearance of blood in stool, persistent fever, or weight loss
⢠Severity of cramps or dehydration symptoms
Management
Most post-infectious IBS improves in 4 to 8 weeks with dietary care and probiotics. If loose motions persist, stool routine test and colon health evaluation may be needed. Tongue coating usually improves once digestion stabilizes.
When to Consult a Doctor Immediately
⢠If stools become bloody or black
⢠If diarrhea is severe with dehydration
⢠If abdominal pain becomes persistent or severe
Every patientâs recovery speed differs. Supportive care and diet correction usually help settle symptoms without the need for long-term medicines.
