Hi, i was diagnosed with AVN(left Hip) stage 2-3 due to this Core Decompression surgery was done 4 months before. I got covid in 2021 and i was hospitalized for 3 days & they gave lots of steroids.
I am doing lot better than before, but I still get manageable pain near hip joint sometimes. Is it common for pain to come & go.
How long can I wait to see if my core decompression surgery is successful. Will my hip joint be a problem to give birth to baby in later years.
Can I start small exercises for hip like walking on threadmill in level 1-2, cycling, climbing on stairs.

Core decompression surgery is done when.
Will take 3-6months to do things without pain ( threadmill, cycling and climbing stairs).
U can start Physiotherapy regularly. Strengthening exercises.
Do meet ur operating surgeon for postop physiotherapy
Don't be too optimistic. Get an xray/ mri evaluation once in 2-3 yrs to see the progress of the hip revascularization. It's possible that steroids during Covid may or may not have affected the Hip. Most of Hip core Decompressions end up in AVN over 7-10yrs, so the success rate is not very high.
With AVN or even Hip replacement, child bearing is never a problem
Next Steps
Do routine basic excercises for strenghthening and weight bearing, strictly avoid impact sports
Hello, greetings from Kolkata.
To answer your first question, there is around 30-40% probability that you might have a complete releif from your pain. Else pain can continue in a on and off fashion. The disease (avn) needs to be re-evaluated in that case.
Your core decompression surgery may take upto 1 year time to heal often. But the pain relief comes relatively early within months after surgery.
No problem should be there in delivery if your avn is in early stage.
Can start walking on a treadmill or cycling with a graded increase in activity.
Best of luck.
Next Steps
can share your xray or mri films online for further assistance
It should have given relief by now
If you don’t have relief consider the below
There are many drugs like
Zoledronic acid
Alandronate
Reunion
Which have shown promising results in giving good results in AVN of hips
Next Steps
Discuss with your doctor about these drugs before starting exercises
U can do all pain dependent routine activities. Healing will take time since its a gradual process. There wont be any problem in delivering baby. Opt for CS. Keep regular follow up with your Orthopaedician.
They gave you lots of steroids to save your life. Unfortunately the hip got affected.
Sequential X-rays every 3 months to evaluate if it’s progressing.
You can start exercises within limits of pain. Avoid impact exercises like jumping, skipping, running etc
Worst case scenario, you may need a hip replacement after a few years following which you can lead a practically normal life
Core decompression is done basically to get over with pain which as you say has shown benefit in reducing your pain..
With time pain would come and go..as the avn process which has begun is continuous.
There are medications which would halt the progress but should be taken by proper consultation with your doctor..Sooner or later this may end in an advanced stage which no one can predict..
Once you feel the pain is increasing, get repeat x ray which wil show progression..
Delivery generally wont be an issue in stage 2-3.
Can do mild exercises. Avoid squatting and stressing your hip.
