Hello,
Chickenpox (varicella) is a highly contagious viral infection. It typically takes 5â7 days for all blisters to dry and form crusts, although recovery may take longer in adults.
You should not return to work until every blister has completely crusted over and no new lesions are appearing.
Since some of your blisters are still active, five days of leave may not be sufficient.
Chickenpox is usually diagnosed clinically, so laboratory testing is not always necessary.
Next Steps
Extend your leave until all lesions have crusted over. This commonly requires 7â10 days from the onset of the rash, sometimes longer. Consult your treating physician for reassessment and an updated medical certificate if required. Rest, maintain adequate hydration, and use paracetamol for fever or discomfort if needed. Calamine lotion or an appropriate antihistamine may help relieve itching. Since chickenpox can be more severe in adults, discuss whether antiviral treatment is appropriate, particularly if new lesions continue appearing.
Health Tips
Avoid scratching blisters to prevent secondary bacterial infections and scarring. Stay isolated until all lesions have crusted over. Avoid contact with
pregnant women, newborns, and immunocompromised individuals, as chickenpox can cause serious complications in these groups. Seek medical attention if you develop breathing difficulty, persistent high fever, severe headache, confusion, or increasing redness and pain around the blisters. My recommendation: Do not resume bank duties while active blisters remain. Return only after complete crusting and clinical recovery. Wishing you a speedy recovery!
