Acute Jaundice 3 days after birth
Bilirubin level was 9 on 3rd day and after 4th day was 17. Kept in phototherapy for 3 days (approx 10 hours each day) but still level is 16. Is 10 hours/day standard practice because most hospitals keep baby for 24/48 hours continuously. But my pediatrician says cannot keep baby for 24 hours straight. Need some clarity.

Hello Need to know the mother’s and baby’s blood group . If there are no risk factors , then usually the jaundice levels will come down gradually . Once in every 2 -3 hrs baby should be fed while under phototherapy . 30-40 mins of feed per feeding session. Continue breastfeeding
Next Steps
If still levels are persistent, based on the day of life and the level of bilirubin , decision is taken on phototherapy.
