The Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology was conceptualized by its city’s fore fathers in the year 1957 as a private trust, its foundation was initially laid in 1963 at the current Parade ground M G Road and subsequently shifted to the present location on Dr.M.H.Marigowda Road ( previously Hosur Road). It was taken over by the Government of Karnataka in February 1970, with creation of posts in the year 1971. The Construction of the building was done by the PWD and the first phase was completed in December 1972. The Institute was Initially Kidwai Memorial Cancer Relief, Research & Training Institute.In the year, 1973 the Department of Radiation Therapy with OPD block and the Radiodiagnosis wings were established with 50 Inpatient beds. The wing is currently located in the administrative block with currently running Radiation therapy and Radiodiagnosis services. On 26th June 1973, the cancer care was set rolling with the establishment of the cancer treatment Department, The Inauguration of the Institute was done by the Honorable Sri V.V.Giri ,The President of India and Hon’ble Mohanlal Sukhadia, Governor of Mysore, The Radiation therapy Services and Visiting specialty services was Institute.From 1975 onwards the 2nd phase of the development was initiated, to establish as full-fledged Cancer Institute with fully organized Departments and manned Departments. Operation theaters and inpatient block with 150 beds were incorporated in December 1975.Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology is named after Rafi Ahmed Kidwai, Who was a politician, an Indian independence activist ,a socialist ,and the Governor of Bombay. Rafi Ahmed Kidwai played a major role in donating 20 acres of the campus land and Rs. 100,000 for the radiotherapy machine. It was founded on 26 June 1973. The Government of Karnataka, by an order on 27 December 1979, converted the institute into an autonomous institution. The institute was registered on 8 January 1980 as an independent body. The first director of the institute, Dr. M. Krishna Bhargava, took charge on 23 January 1980.
