St. Thomas Hospital was started in 1972 as a small clinic by the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph (FSJ), and today it is one of the best multi-speciality hospitals in Chennai. The hospital started expanding since 1980 and in 1986, their first Oncology department was established. By 1990, they owned an ambulance and started modernizing their treatments. Their nursing school to help the women of the weak section of the society was inaugurated in 1993 and the multipurpose hall was built in 1997. To ensure that no child goes unattended, they built a separate paediatric ward with modern amenities in 2005. 

The hospital had to never look back since its inception and each year they had progressed while providing an undisputed healthcare service to its patients. In 2018, it received its pre-accreditation from NABH.

Dr. K.V. Alala Sundaram is an expert in general surgery, plastic surgery, and cosmetology. With an experience of above 30 years, he has also been a public servant in a government hospital for 21 years.    He has been awarded Best Doctor Award for his expert skills and hard work. He is available at the hospital every day (barring Sunday) from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. Dr. Kasturi Maddirala, a gynaecologist at the hospital possess experience of nearly 37 years. She is an MBBS and DGO. She is also associated with IMA, and RCOG, London.She is available for 6 days a week at different time slots and can be reached for any fertility-related complications. Dr. M. Anand Pratap is a renowned psychiatrist and neuro analyst and has experience of over 20 years. He also has specialisation in de-addiction counselling. Dr. B. Anbumani is M.D Paediatrics, DCH, DPM (Psychiatry). He is a part of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and Indian Academy of Paediatrics and has nearly 17 years of experience in dealing with child psychology. While he is available from Monday to Saturday, he can also be reached out for an emergency situation.
