Masters in Psychology
Tanya has a Masters' degree in Counselling for Mental Health and Wellness (Applied Psychology) from New York University. She has experience providing individual, family and group counselling to children, adolescents and young adults dealing with a wide range of mental health issues such as trauma, anxiety, stress, depression, interpersonal difficulties, body image issues, self-harm and bullying. She has also worked as a counsellor in a school setting providing support to children and adolescents with special needs as well as academic and socio-emotional difficulties. Tanya takes a strengths-based and client-centered approach to therapy and creates a safe space for her clients to open up in session. She believes that building a strong client-therapist relationship is important in order for therapy to be successful. She uses cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) interventions along with visual art, drama and play therapy techniques to help clients reach their goals.
Tanya is very patient, not only in the sense that she's a therapist and that she has to listen to the patient, but she is very particular about figuring out what exactly the issue is, and helping the patient understand the issue as well. Just like finding out the issue, the advice she gives is comprehensive and ideal for whatever problem the patient has. She makes sure the patient is comfortable during the sessions. I find myself looking forward to our weekly sessions. And I feel myself getting better.
She's a really nice and sweet person who will genuinely care for you and the problems you face. She plays by the book, so I'd recommend her to first timers for sure. Not so sure about people who've been in therapy before, because you might be used to some of these techniques.
Nonetheless, it's hard to find someone who knows you reach early for your appointments and so will come early too. That's the level of personalization you'll experience when you're with her. She'll know the names of the people in your life, how you feel about each one, every single thing, because she genuinely cares.
And no problem will be disregarded as too tiny or unimportant. Everything matters.
All in all, I'd definitely recommend her to first timers. Think she needs a little more experience dealing with people who've been in therapy before, but she's very open to feedback and learning. She's a keeper.
