I consulted Dr. Shruti Maheshwary in my 29th week of pregnancy when my blood sugar levels were consistently on the higher side. Despite trying various diets and lifestyle changes, I wasn’t seeing much improvement. From our very first consultation, I could tell that she had a deep understanding of how nutrition impacts blood sugar regulation and overall metabolic health.

Before I met Shruti maam, I was a 21-year-old 103 kg male individual who had absolutely no regard for proper eating, exercising and a healthy lifestyle. I was pursuing my Chartered Accountancy degree, and was always caught up with office on weekdays and studies on the weekend. Apart from the occasional footy 2-3 times a month, I never really had any inclination towards any physical activity. Whenever I was asked about getting it shape, I always used to blame my routine or defer it to my to-do list post my examination. Amidst all of my ignorance, I slowly realized the extreme changes in me – I was always tired, lethargic, exhausted and never in the mood to actively pursue anything. I did not have the energy to study with a fresh mind and on the inside, I could sense somehow all of this had to change. I was in my preparatory leave for my CA exams, when the pandemic hit and my exams got postponed. Because of the additional time I had, I figured it is better to work on this goal, and keep myself busy, rather than spend time in other activities.I was introduced to Shruti maam by a friend of mine who told me how her diets are and how she is personally invested in each of the client’s progress. What stood out to me most was that she wanted us to first put in some effort before coming to her for consultation. This shows that you are not just any client for her. She considers you one of her owns. Throughout our sessions, she always made sure that I was putting in the required amount of efforts. Any new goals were set only after achieving the existing ones. There was never a situation when I felt I had bitten off more than I could chew. I had my first consultation with maam on 8th May 2020, where I weighed 103 kilos. Absolutely nervous, it was her who made it clear to me that this was a Herculean task, and that only I could get that task done. This helped me a lot because I was not promised anything unrealistic, but rather a clear and precise roadmap of all that was expected of me. We had a 2 hour Zoom call, where maam spoke to me and my family, asked me about my daily food intake, told me what needs to be added and reduced, and ultimately what my targets were. I had a total of 5 consultations with targets to be achieved over 15 days that had different types of exercises, regulated meal times, controlled portions of eating food and sleep patterns. A notable thing which stands out in the diet plan is an emphasis on eating locally sourced food indigenous to our region and not imported food or additional supplements. This helped in reaffirming a belief in what maam had told me, because she told me something different to the trend these days that focuses on supplements or imported food for weight loss. Over the next 2 and a half months, I stuck to what maam had told me to do – regular exercise, controlled portions of food, regulated eating and sleeping – pushing myself to new limits each day. It was not at all easy. The first week was extremely tiring and exhausting as my body had not yet adapted to such a change. I also remember having to seek out new exercises to do at home because of the lockdown. Amidst all this, I distinctly remember how prompt maam was in supporting me and addressing any concerns that I had. Even when things were too hard, she always made sure that I was being made aware about why I am doing this. Gradually, the results started coming in – old clothes banished for being tight started fitting perfectly, an inclination for being active was created, eating was never out of control. I checked my weight a couple of days before my 22nd birthday in July and the unimaginable had happened – I weighed 83 kilos! A loss of 20 kilograms taught me a lot of things, but the key takeaway from it was consistency. I learnt over the tenure of the program that progression is better than perfection. Not exercising to my full potential on an odd day was okay, but not exercising at all was unacceptable. Having cheat meals after completion of targets was rewarding, but not doing what has been told is unacceptable. Trust the process and keep pushing. Finally, focusing on your own health and well-being is the best investment you can make for yourself. Exercising is the most underrated form of therapy, with eating food being the most overrated. Once that learning is imbibed in you, staying healthy is inevitable and exciting. In the words of Shruti maam herself, her aim is not to make me dependent on her consultation, but to make me an independent dietician for myself. I can confidently say that she has been successful in her endeavor, and I would urge anyone who wants to make change happen in their well-being to consult Shruti maam. Good luck!
