Hello doctors,
I have been experiencing tinnitus in my left ear only. I recently visited a Government Medical College where I had both audiometry and tympanometry tests done. The results came back normal.
I would like to know:
What further tests are recommended to investigate tinnitus in one ear (unilateral tinnitus)?
Are there any specific scans or neurological evaluations that should be done next?

What is Tinnitus?
Tinnitus is the perception of sound in the absence of any external auditory stimulus. Patients often describe it as ringing, buzzing, hissing, roaring, or clicking in one or both ears.
If you experience such sounds without any external source, it is likely to be tinnitus.
Causes of Tinnitus:
Tinnitus can result from a variety of underlying conditions, broadly categorized as:
1. Ear-Related Causes
2. Neurological Causes
3. Vascular Causes
4. Drug-Induced (Ototoxicity)
5. Systemic Conditions
6. Psychological Factors
7. Idiopathic Causes
Proper history-taking and clinical examination are key to identifying the underlying cause.
Is There a Specific Test for Tinnitus?
There is no single definitive test for tinnitus, as it is a subjective experience—heard only by the patient. However, several audiological and imaging tests can help evaluate hearing and rule out other conditions associated with tinnitus.
Next Steps
If you’re experiencing tinnitus, it’s important to consult an ENT specialist for a thorough evaluation and appropriate management.
