My lower jaw tooth has been hurting for weeks now. Whenever I try to chew hein the tooth it hurts very bad. When I chew the gums covering that tooth swells up and food particles also get stuck on the tooth and the gums. Why is this happening and what can I do?

The problem you telling generally happen because of wisdom tooth impaction. The gum over the tooth has covered the tooth or there might be a cavity. Get an X-ray done of that area to clear out the problem and treatment will bed one accordingly.
You have problems with the wisdom tooth( eruption) . Please go for OPG x ray to check whether there is space for eruption. If there is any issues, please go for either operculectomy or impaction surgery.
Gargle vigorously with a mouthwash or salt water to maintain hygiene and free from infection.
