My son is 2 years old. I noticed some yellowishness on his teeth and a bit of oral smell, despite brushing 2 times a day. He is using non-fluoride Colgate toothpaste suitable for 0-2 year olds.
1)What can I do to reduce yellowness on his teeth and oral smell.
2) Is it safe to introduce fluoride based. He is using non-fluoride Colgate toothpaste currently. I heard they clean better, but he tends to swallow toothpaste after brushing and doesn't spit out.

Hi,
Rinse mouth after every meal, clean his tongue to avoid bad breath, for yellow teeth, if there is plaque deposition, get scaling done. Rest don't worry
Get a professional scaling done ,and fluoride is safe but kindly give only a smear of rice grain size , always help kid while brushing, include more fibers in diet , and hydrate them often ,try to clean the tongue with clean cloth
Hello mam read you concern , I noticed that you are doing all good but what i found in children in general that bad smell and yellowishness of teeth is a common problem and what i find is lack of tongue cleaning milk at bad time lack of water intake open mouth breathing which can be due to various cause may be his upper teeth are proclained due to which he cant seal his lips other then that some time children forgets to rehydrate them self which also leads to bad breath
Next Steps
Find these habits in your child if any present treat that
Hello
The yellowishness might be calculus deposition which is hard to remove. That either be removed by professional cleaning but since the child is small you can wait for a while.
You can use CHEERIO/ KIDODENT toothpaste for children for daily brushing
Clean his tongue in regular intervals to avoid bad breath
1) Yellowness could be plaque or beginning of small cavities if there is night time bottle feeding, make sure to wipe teeth after feeds. It could also be because of certain foods in our diet. Please feel free to connect and consult so we can guide you properly with small habits that are easy to follow with a 2 year old and that go a long way!
2) Fluoride toothpaste is recommended but a very tiny rice grain amount- twice a day! With the correct brushing technique
Hi! Thank you for sharing your concern — it’s completely understandable to feel worried when you notice something unusual in your little one’s mouth.
Mild yellowing and slight oral smell at this age are very common, mostly because toddlers can’t clean their teeth properly yet. You’re already doing a great job by brushing twice daily.
To help:
👉 Brush for him twice a day and gently clean the tongue.
👉 You can safely start a fluoride toothpaste now — just a tiny rice-grain amount is all that’s needed, and it’s safe even if he swallows it. Fluoride protects his teeth better and reduces yellowish buildup.
👉 Avoid giving milk right before sleep, or clean after.
You’re doing the right things, and with a few small changes, you’ll see improvement soon. If the yellowing or smell continues, a quick pediatric dental visit will help clarify everything.
You’re taking wonderful care of your child — keep going! 😊
