Hello, Addiction of using smartphone for long time can cause comorbid psychiatric symptoms. Symptoms of mobile phone addiction include a) preoccupation with mobile; b) increasing tolerance; c) development of psychological dependency and withdrawal symptoms; d) inability to reduce phone use; e) phone use to cope with negative moods and reduce stress; and f) replacing other activities and relationships with recurrent gaming use despite awareness of the deleterious consequences. The effective therapy for phone addiction needs an individual approach and best results are expected on combined psychological and pharmacological treatment. It includes modifying the behavior i.e. Setting up realistic goals, daily log of mobile use, structuring use, creating a new schedule and to learn to control mobile usage, reducing maladaptive cognitions.

Hello, Well, smartphone use may not directly cause depression; but yes, excessive use or problematic use of smartphone can be an important risk factor for any stress related disorders like depression and anxiety. It is observed that there is been a very strong association of smartphone use with feeling of loneliness, poor physical health, reduced social interaction, disturbed sleep patterns, etc. These factors are very strong indicators of depression. So in a way ,yes, problematic or excessive use does contribute to the risk for depression. Remember, any habit be it watching TV, drinking or in your case phone use, if it becomes priority over other important responsibilities, if you are getting distressed by its use or when you are not using it, then it means that the habit has become problematic. In worse case there can even develop addiction to it.

Hello Smartphones per say cannot cause any health hazards unless you are addicted to it. Depression can occur if you start comparing the social media world of others as opposed to yours. Long hours of screen exposure can also lead to anxiety and stress. Also, your attention also takes a toll as you might not feel stimulated enough towards reading a book or a newspaper
Next Steps
if there are persisting problems, consult a therapist
Health Tips
we should ideally not expose ourselves to screen (tv, mobile, laptop) for more than 2 hours in a day in total.
