Hello, I understand your concern
It is a common concern, but not all newborns sleep exactly 20–22 hours. Most healthy newborns sleep 14–18 hours/day, usually in short stretches of 2–3 hours at a time. Some babies are more alert or sensitive to light, noise, or feeding cycles, and that can temporarily affect sleep.
If your baby is: Feeding well, Passing urine ≥6 times/day and regular stools, Gaining weight steadily, Active and not unusually fussy, then sleep variations alone are not worrisome at this age.
Next Steps
Track baby’s total sleep time over 24 hours (even short naps)
Ensure quiet, dim lighting, and soothing routine before sleep
Try burping well after feeds and swaddling to help sleep
If baby sleeps
Health Tips
Avoid overstimulation and avoid letting baby stay awake too long between feeds (max 60–90 mins awake at this age). Some newborns have day-night reversal — this usually settles on its own in a few weeks.

Not all the baby sleep exactly 20-22 hrs
It depends upon surrounding environment of the baby how you take care them.
Even if baby sleep 15-18hrs also enough
Circadian rhythm takes time to develop as the baby comes out of the closed confines of a mother’s womb - no light, only the humming comfort of the fluid around and rhythms outside.
We expect normal full term newborn to sleep approximately 16-18 hours per day, pattern of sleep and wakefulness is irregular, the longest continuous sleep period being 2.5-4 hours, often synchronised with feeding times
So expect the baby to get up for feeds - it’s good for him-, after a wet diaper ( they hate being wet), and for any other reason which causes him discomfort - could be heat, noise, light. And he will cry! That’s the only way for him to express himself. It’s also a comforting sign for paediatricians - crying baby is a healthy baby
If baby is accepting feed well and passing urine 6-8 times per/day . Sleep pattern is not concern . Some babies will sleep for 16-18 hrs . No need to
Worry about it . Sleeppattern will b genetic also .
