Burning sensation with tretinoin is very common in the first few weeks and is a known effect called retinoid reaction â it usually improves significantly after 4-6 weeks as your skin adjusts. To reduce the irritation, apply tretinoin only every alternate night instead of every night initially, and use just a pea-sized amount for the whole face. You can also try the buffer method: apply your moisturizer first, wait 10 minutes, then apply the tretinoin on top â this reduces the burning without affecting how well it works. Keep using sunscreen daily as tretinoin increases sun sensitivity.
Next Steps
Switch to every other night application and try the buffer method to reduce burning. If the irritation is severe or skin peels heavily, please discuss with your dermatologist. Please consult me directly on Practo for a detailed evaluation.
