Should I switch  Levera Medicine?
I have been taking Levera for the past 5 years since I was 15. Since then I have been experiencing poor concentration, memory, less motivated towards goals, emotional numbness and nothing interests me anymore. I have been experiencing this since the start of treatment. Currently I am taking 500 mg of Levera twice a day. Should I ask my neurologist to switch for a better alternative if it is available?

Levera is a medicine for Epilepsy. I think you should consult the Doctor who prescribed it in the first place. This medicine is available only on prescription . The Doctor prescribing it should decide when to stop it.

Hello. The symptoms you have described—poor concentration, impaired memory, emotional numbness, loss of motivation, and reduced interest in activities—are well-known neuropsychiatric side effects associated with Levetiracetam (Levera). These are recognized cognitive and behavioral adverse effects that can persist as long as the medication is continued. Key Medical Guidance: Yes, Discuss a Switch with Your Neurologist: You should definitely schedule an appointment with your neurologist to discuss these side effects. Newer antiepileptic alternatives (such as Brivaracetam or Lamotrigine, depending on your specific type of seizure/epilepsy) often have a significantly lower incidence of cognitive and emotional side effects while providing equal seizure control. CRITICAL WARNING — DO NOT STOP LEVERA ABRUPTLY: Never reduce the dose or stop taking Levera on your own without direct supervision from your neurologist. Suddenly stopping anti-seizure medication can trigger severe, recurring seizures (breakthrough seizures) or status epilepticus, which can be life-threatening. Seizure-Free Status Assessment: If you have been completely seizure-free for 5 full years, your neurologist may also evaluate whether you are eligible for a gradual, tapered withdrawal of antiepileptic therapy altogether after conducting a fresh EEG.
Next Steps
If you have been seizure-free for 5 years, ask your doctor if a repeat EEG and clinical evaluation are warranted to assess overall brain electrical activity.
Health Tips
Even if you feel emotionally numb, continue taking your regular 500 mg BD dose on schedule until your neurologist prescribes a cross-tapering regimen to another drug.
