Sertraline effect on fertility
I am 33 years old male and have been taking sertraline 10 mg for anxiety and panic attacks from past 4 years. We have a kid of 5 years old. Now we are trying for second baby with no luck. Does sertraline cause any effect on male fertility? Or does it cause any birth defects to the baby? How long should I stop the medicine if we are trying for the baby?

Sertraline does not have a significant direct effect on male fertility. It does not cause any significant birth defects when consumed by father. Possibility of birth defects arises only when mother is taking Sertraline during pregnancy. Frequency of such birth defects is there but still low. The only way Sertraline or any similar SSRI antidepressants can effect conception is by effecting sexual desire, erection and difficulty in achieving orgasm/ejaculation. If the medication is not causing any such sexual adverse effect, medication can continue in this period. This is the general advice. For more accurate advice, detailed assessment will be required.
