Is there any cure for schizophrenia? my elder brother is on medication more than 20 years...he is currently on schizopin and soltus. Now he is becoming very weak by this medicine he is loosing muscle and weight. Is there any alternative to this medicine? Is there any best alternative option to cure..

Your brother needs a complete evaluation. The psychotropic drugs mostly increases weight,but he losing weight is a matter of concern.if he had lost his significant weight in very less time,he needs to be completely evaluated. It could be a minor reason such as s/e of the particular med,his secondary sadness not allowing him to eat,his gastritis may be or itt could be a malignancy in the body too.

Schizophrenia individuals can be anywhere in the spectrum of a highly functioning person to a totally incapable individual, similarly symptoms can be controlled totally by medication in some and only to some extent in others. Lot many other factors are associated with patients improvement like, patients insight in to illness, regularity of medications, doctors follow up, family support, employment, severity of symptoms etc. So please consult a psychiatrist with a detailed history of all the treatments given till now so that the best can be done.

He may be developing depression because it is a common ailment with schizophrenia. Talk to your psychiatrist. Medicines are a must and they don’t cause such side effects
