This is retinol-induced irritant contact dermatitis. The skin around the eyes is very thin and sensitive — retinol should never be applied directly around the eyes. Stop retinol immediately. The blackening (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation) from the irritation will take a few weeks to fade.
Next Steps
Stop retinol now. Apply a gentle fragrance-free moisturiser (like Cetaphil or Vaseline) around the eyes twice daily. A mild hydrocortisone 1% cream for 5–7 days can help reduce redness. Avoid retinol near the eyes in future. Consult me on Practo if no improvement in 2 weeks.

Hello, Thank you for your query. • Based on the information provided, it is difficult to suggest the most appropriate treatment without a proper assessment, as several skin conditions can appear similar. • Kindly share clear photographs of the affected area in good lighting along with details such as duration of the problem, symptoms, and any treatments used previously. • I would advise against starting any OTC creams or self-medication, as some products may worsen the condition or delay proper treatment. • An accurate diagnosis is the first step towards effective and long-lasting results. You may book a consultation for a detailed evaluation and a personalized treatment plan. I would be happy to guide you further.
