A small amount of blood in the stool of infants is most commonly due to constipation, which can cause small tears (anal fissures) in the anus as your baby passes hard stools. If she has skipped stools for a couple of days, it’s likely she is experiencing constipation, which is relatively common at this age. However, there are other, less common causes for blood in stool, so it is important to monitor her closely.
Next Steps
Monitor diapers and stools: Take note of the color, amount of blood, and frequency of her bowel movements. Gentle diet changes (if she is eating solids): Offer pureed fruits (such as prunes, pears, or apples), and ensure adequate hydration (breast milk, formula, or some water if advised). Observe for warning signs: If you notice large amounts of blood, persistent vomiting, severe abdominal pain, swelling, fever, refusal to feed, excessive sleepiness, or if the baby appears very unwell, please seek immediate medical attention. Avoid self-medication: Do not give any medication or laxatives without consulting a pediatrician.

Hello A small amount of blood in the stool is often due to straining or minor cuts near the anus, especially if the baby is constipated. Since there’s been no stool for 2 days, it’s important to soften the stools with more fluids and fiber-rich foods. Watch for any recurrence of blood or signs of discomfort, and come back if needed. Most cases settle on their own.
Next Steps
Increase fluids: Offer more breast milk or formula Can add small sips of boiled and cooled water if advised Adjust diet: Add fiber-rich purees: prunes, pears, papaya, spinach, oats Avoid bananas and apples temporarily (can worsen constipation) For hard stools or straining: Gently apply coconut oil around the anus
Health Tips
Red flags: If blood recurs No stool for >3 days Baby has distension, fever, excessive crying Weight loss or poor feeding Stool becomes black or tarr
