Hello,
A sustained-release (SR/LA) propranolol tablet should not be cut or halved. If you cut a Propranolol SR 20 mg tablet, it loses its sustained-release property and will not work for 24 hours. Instead, it may behave unpredictably-partly like an immediate-release dose with a shorter and uneven effect.
So, half of an SR 20 mg tablet will NOT reliably work for 24 hours, and it is not equivalent to a proper immediate-release tablet.
Next Steps
- If a lower dose is needed, ask your doctor for:
Immediate-release propranolol 10 mg, or
A lower-strength SR tablet if available
- Take the medicine exactly as prescribed.
- Monitor pulse rate and blood pressure.
Health Tips
Do not split SR/LA tablets unless the strip specifically says “scored and safe to split.”
Do not mix IR and SR forms without medical advice.
Avoid sudden stopping of propranolol.
