RCT : Right time for capping?
Hi Doc, recently I had my RCT done for front tooth..it was done on Wednesday n doc called me for capping on Sunday...since the RCT was still paining n I was still taking painkillers, I felt a lot of pain(exteme pain) while capping was done. My query 1 is : After the RCT is done,do we need to wait for capping or after 2 days it can be done(as during my other RCT with other docs I didn't feel pain during RCT) Query 2: The XRay was taken a lot many times during rct, around 7-8 times, which resulted in ulcers in my mouth...also my tongue is injured from below. Is this way of treatment correct? Query 3: The anesthesia spray used was not cleared timely by suction which resulted it in moving down in my throat and when I came home after treatment, my left tonsel( tooth side) was paining badly. Is this correct way to do? Thanks...

hi yes we do recall a patient after 2-3 days for tooth preparation after the root canal is done and it depends upon patient to patient sometimes we even do it on the same day if things are favourable . RCT's are done under local anesthesia ....usually u wont feel any pain during the procedure, but in few badly infection cases (abscess)there might be little pain where u will be required a extra dose of anesthesia. 3-4 x-rays are enough for a procedure.......sometimes the taken x-rays may not record properly, sometimes over obturated .....your dentist may prefer 1 or more additional x-rays. if xrays handled properly ...there wont be any ulcerations and injury of tongue. topical anesthesia is sprayed so that the tissue absorbs the spray and reduces pain at the site of injection.....not neccessarily it should be cleared. yes, few complain of cough and throat inflamation . extreme pain after 4 days....on to it capping was done ....rather would have waited for few more days ......related pain while taking x-rays find a new DENTIST for yourself......keep smiling ...tc

Hi,there can be pain in the root canal treated tooth for few days, generally the dentist shall wait for that time till the pain subsides,do warm salt rinses several times daily. Many X-rays are required during the process, you can request your dentist to be more careful during taking the X-rays .

Each root canal is different. Sometimes there may be pain upto 2 weeks after root canal is finished. Normally extreme pain should not occur during capping. If you are experiencing a lot of pain, generally the dentist will wait for a few days or weeks before doing capping. Sometimes more X-rays may be required during the procedure so don’t worry. You may mention to your dentist that you experienced lot of discomfort during and post treatment and to be gentle during the procedure.
