Rabies vaccination
I wanted to ask a question regarding rabies vaccination as my sister is preparing for vet school . Should pre exposure be considered before started college ? How long does 5 dose course of vaccine protect for ? Will it protect against unknown exposure ?

That would be a hasty thing to do. We vets are exposed to dogs only when clinical session starts , for two years only theoretical part are taught . Also , in clinical classes all precautions are taken to ensure safety. And teachers act as a guardian to students vets . 3 dose pre bite vaccine protect for one year

Vet students get their pre-exposure anti rabies vaccination before their enter into their clinical courses (usually 4th year). It is not necessary to get vaccination before the college starts. Vaccination will give immunity based on brands. Some have been protected for 1 year and others for 3 years.

Pre exposure vaccination to prepare for vet school is a bit too early. She would be at risk only upon entering clinical courses which is late in the degree.

According to the CDC, veterinarians and veterinary students typically fall into risk category 3 for rabies exposure. Following their recommendation, they should receive two doses on day 0 and day 7, followed by a single dose every year to mitigate the risk of unknown exposure
