Some degree of Bronchitis is always present in smokers. Sputum is probably due to lung infection. Good news you quit smoking, Your lungs will take next 10 years to dispose all the tar and nicotine and to heal fully.
If it keeps happening please consult a doctor. Some amount of cough is expected if you quit all at once. But if the sputum is not watery but coloured it is an indication of infection.
