Primary immunodeficiency
My mother is suffering from a common variable immunodeficiency which is a primary immunodeficiency and we got to know about it after meeting an immunologist where they checked her immunoglobulin profile and all the IgA,IgG,IgM levels were too low and body's immune system cannot produce enough antibodies. Then immunologist suggest to give IVIG every month but it is giving her severe side effects (vomiting, headache, chills, fever, diaherrea)during the IV infusion and also later for 1 week to 15 days.So we want to know is there any treatment for CVID in Ayurveda? She is suffering from CVID from past 3 years

Hello, Thank you for sharing your mother’s condition. Common Variable Immunodeficiency (CVID) is a complex and rare primary immune disorder, and I understand how difficult it must be to manage — especially with the strong side effects of IVIG therapy. In Ayurveda, while we don’t have a direct term for CVID, the symptoms and immune deficiency can be approached through Rasayana therapy (rejuvenation), which aims to strengthen ojas (vital immunity), support digestion (agni), and restore dhatu balance. This is done through specific herbs, dietary changes, and immune-boosting formulations — but it must be done very cautiously and under supervision. Please note: Ayurveda cannot replace IVIG, but it may help in supportive care, improving quality of life, and possibly reducing frequency/severity of episodes. I’d recommend booking a consultation so I can go through her full history, current status, and tailor a gentle and supportive plan accordingly. Wishing your mother comfort and strength, Dr. Arisha Ayurveda Consultant

Thank you for sharing the details about your mother's condition. **Common Variable Immunodeficiency (CVID)** is indeed a serious primary immunodeficiency, and managing it long-term—especially with side effects from IVIG—can be physically and emotionally draining. ### 🧬 Modern View Recap: CVID results in: * **Low levels of IgG, IgA, and/or IgM** * **Recurrent infections**, especially respiratory and GI * Autoimmune issues, fatigue, and sometimes gut problems IVIG (intravenous immunoglobulin) is the standard treatment, but as in your mother’s case, it can cause **severe infusion-related reactions**. --- ## 🌿 Ayurvedic Perspective: In Ayurveda, CVID can be interpreted as a **chronic Ojas (vital immunity essence) depletion disorder**, falling under **Ojakshaya** and **Vyadhi Kshamatva Hani**. The immune dysfunction can relate to imbalances in **Vata-Pitta**, weak **Agni** (digestive/metabolic fire), and improper **Rasa Dhatu formation** (plasma/lymph nourishment). --- ## ✅ Goals of Ayurvedic Support: 1. **Rebuild Ojas and Dhatu Bala** (tissue immunity) 2. **Support Agni and Gut Immunity** 3. **Reduce frequency/severity of infections** 4. **Lessen dependency or side effects of IVIG (if not completely avoidable)** --- ## 🌿 Ayurvedic Approach to CVID: ### 1. **Dietary Recommendations (Ahar):** * Easy to digest, nourishing foods * Use **moong dal khichdi**, **vegetable soups**, **cooked rice**, **ghee** * Avoid raw, cold, processed, fermented, and leftover foods * Include **immunity-building herbs like turmeric, ginger, garlic** in cooking ### 2. **Herbal & Rasayana Support:** (*To be customized by a Vaidya based on Prakriti and symptoms, but generally safe options include:*) | Herb / Rasayana | Function | | ------------------------------------ | --------------------------------------------------- | | **Consult us for details* | Immunomodulator, Rasayana | | ***Consult us for details* | Balances all doshas, excellent for immune strength | | ***Consult us for details* | Rich in antioxidants, supports Rasa and Rakta dhatu | | ***Consult us for details* | Rasayana, supports immune and endocrine systems | | *Consult us for details* | Traditional Rasayana to build Ojas | > 📌 Note: Always begin with low doses. Monitor for any gut reaction or intolerance. --- ### 3. **Panchakarma (if feasible & stable health):** *Consult us for details* Once her condition is stable, gentle detox and Rasayana therapies can help: * **Abhyanga** (warm medicated oil massage) * **Swedana** (mild herbal steam) * **Nasya** (for sinus, brain immunity) * **Basti** (medicated enema – immune boosting & gut healing) Only under the supervision of an **experienced Ayurvedic doctor like us**. --- ### 4. **Lifestyle & Mental Health:** * Ensure **regular sleep**, **gentle pranayama** (like Anulom-Vilom) * Reduce exposure to crowds/infections * Moderate sun exposure for natural Vitamin D * **Avoid stress, overexertion, and fasting** --- ## ⚠️ Important: * **Ayurveda does not offer a cure for CVID**, but it **can improve quality of life**, reduce infection load, and **support immune function naturally**. * **Never stop IVIG without medical consultation**, but you may discuss a **switch to SCIG (Subcutaneous Immunoglobulin)** which has fewer side effects. * Ensure **Ayurveda is integrated carefully** under both Vaidya and Immunologist supervision. --- ## 👨‍⚕️ What You Can Do Next: 1. **Consult us for details* 2. Begin with **safe Rasayana support** like: * 1 tsp ***Consult us for details*** with warm water twice daily * 2–3 gm ***Consult us for details*** with honey * 1 tsp ***Consult us for details*** daily Would you like help locating a nearby Ayurvedic center with immunology experience, or should I help you draft a treatment plan tailored to your mother's age and symptoms? Ayurveda can’t replace IVIG but may help improve immunity and reduce symptoms with Rasayana herbs like Ashwagandha, Giloy, and Amalaki. It can support overall health and reduce side effects. Consult an experienced Ayurvedic doctor for personalized care.

Your  mother condition — CVID — means  body isn’t making enough protective antibodies That’s why allopathic treatment is so important — it directly provides those antibodies and keeps you safe from serious infections. Along with this, Ayurveda can play a very valuable role With diet, lifestyle, and herbal support, we can help strengthen her  overall health, improve  digestion, boost  natural immunity, and reduce how often infections happen and reduce her side effects This way, she will not only feel stronger and more energetic but also recover faster if she do catch infections. The goal is to help you live more comfortably and confidently — all  continuing your allopathic treatment so you stay well protected
