I have been using Acmist moisturiser and Photostable gold sunscreen prescribed by my dermatologist for the past 3 years. Wanted to know if these are safe to continue during pregnancy as well?

When considering the safety of any skincare products during pregnancy, it's crucial to look at the ingredients to ensure they do not contain substances that could be harmful to the developing fetus. Let's examine the general safety of moisturizers and sunscreens, as well as any specific concerns related to Acmist Moisturizer and Photostable Gold Sunscreen. ### Acmist Moisturiser Acmist Moisturiser is typically used for oily and acne-prone skin. It usually contains ingredients like: - **Aloe Vera**: Generally considered safe for topical use during pregnancy. - **Niacinamide**: A form of Vitamin B3, which is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy. - **Salicylic Acid**: In small concentrations (below 2%), it is generally considered safe. However, high doses or large surface area application should be avoided. - **Tea Tree Oil**: Can be safe in low concentrations, but high doses should be avoided as it can cause irritation. ### Photostable Gold Sunscreen Photostable Gold Sunscreen typically contains: - **Octinoxate**: Generally considered safe for use during pregnancy. - **Avobenzone**: Considered safe for use during pregnancy. - **Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide**: Both are physical blockers and are considered very safe for use during pregnancy as they do not penetrate the skin. ### General Guidelines for Skincare During Pregnancy: 1. **Avoid Retinoids**: Ingredients like retinol and other retinoids should be avoided due to potential teratogenic effects. 2. **Check for Salicylic Acid Concentration**: Low concentrations (below 2%) are usually safe, but higher concentrations should be avoided. 3. **Consult a Healthcare Provider**: It's always best to consult with a healthcare provider or dermatologist regarding any skincare products used during pregnancy. ### Conclusion - **Acmist Moisturiser**: Likely safe if it does not contain high concentrations of salicylic acid or other potentially harmful ingredients. Always check the specific ingredient list and consult with a healthcare provider. - **Photostable Gold Sunscreen**: Generally considered safe for use during pregnancy due to its use of safe active ingredients like zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, and other non-penetrative UV filters. Always consult with your healthcare provider before using new skincare products during pregnancy to ensure they are safe for you and your developing baby.
