I have a fracture at the base of my fifth metatarsal, and the bone fragment has separated. Could you please let me know if this can be treated with a slab/cast or if surgery would be necessary?
A separated fragment at the 5th metatarsal base usually needs surgical fixation (screw) for proper healing and to avoid non-union. Cast alone may not be enough if there is significant displacement. An orthopedic surgeon needs to evaluate your X-ray and decide.
Next Steps
Consult me on Practo or see an orthopedic surgeon in person soon.

Based on the X-ray, this appears to be a displaced fracture at the base of the fifth metatarsal. While some fractures in this region can heal with a cast or boot, a displaced fracture may require surgical fixation to restore alignment, provide stable compression, and reduce the risk of delayed or non-union. The final decision depends on the exact fracture type, degree of displacement, and clinical examination.
Next Steps
I recommend consulting an Orthopaedic Surgeon at the earliest for a detailed assessment. Additional X-ray views or CT scan may be required before deciding the best treatment. If you would like me to review your X-rays in detail and discuss whether surgery is necessary in your case, you can also book an online consultation with me.
Health Tips
Until you are evaluated, avoid putting weight on the affected foot, keep it elevated, apply ice to reduce swelling, and use a below-knee splint or CAM boot if available. If pain, swelling, or deformity worsens, seek immediate medical attention.
This is pseudo jones fracture , in Xray the fragment looks displaced , slab/ cast will not help in your case and may cause non union of the fracture ,surgery is best.
Health Tips
If it is a fresh fracture
Avoid weight bearing on the injured foot
Based on patient profile the decision of management has to be taken, ask the surgeon and get to know the pros and cons of both modalities, analyse the options and choose accordingly
Hey ,
It is called jones fracture and it needs to be fixed . Can’t be managed conservatively with slab or cast as the fractured segment is displaced . If it would have been in displaced then we could have tried a conservative approach .
