A platelet count of 70,000 in typhoid is quite common and by itself is not alarming, since typhoid and most viral or bacterial fevers temporarily suppress the bone marrow. Counts usually start recovering on their own within a week or so of the fever settling, and no platelet transfusion is needed at this level. What matters more at 66 years is her breathing difficulty during cough and the weakness. Please get her chest examined and a chest X-ray plus oxygen saturation check done, along with a repeat CBC in 3 days, CRP, and if she looks dehydrated then kidney function and electrolytes. Keep her well hydrated, give soft easily digestible food, and complete the full course of the antibiotic her doctor has started without stopping midway. Watch for these danger signs and take her to the nearest emergency at once if any appear: bleeding from gums or nose, blood in vomit, urine or stool, black stools, red or purple spots on the skin, breathlessness at rest, saturation below 94 percent, drowsiness or confusion, or severe abdominal pain. Please avoid aspirin, ibuprofen or any painkiller other than paracetamol as they worsen bleeding risk. If you would like me to go through her reports and guide you properly, you can consult me here (fee Rs 500) or at Synergy Multispeciality Hospital, Miraj.
