Hi,
My mother has been sufferring from paranoid schizophrenia since more than 25 years now.
Recently we visited psychiatrist who guided us very well about the treatment. To have second opinion about the same, we consulted our family doctor(senior, very well experinced). He was doubtful about post treatment outcome, maybe only for temporary period.
Now I am very confused, have some queries as follows
1.is it curable?
2.curable, then for temporary period or else?
3.does she require admission because she refuses to visit any doctor or take any medicines?
4.any side effects post treatment?
5.what probability of abatement of symptoms can we expect?Possible to heal 50% or more?
I would be very grateful if someone can help me out with little understanding for undergoing treatment.
Thanks.

Hello,
1. & 2. 25 years of long illness without treatment, there are less chances that she will completely recover but you will see gradual recovery
in her symptoms and she may function relatively normal for a long time.
3. No once she will improve with medication she can be educated about illness and the importance of medication. She can also be started on long acting injectables which need to be given once in a month.
4. Every medication will have its effect and side effect. These side effects can be managed and as a reason the dosage of medication are gradually built for old age.
5.It depends on person to person there are number of good and poor prognostic factors which decide the course of schizophrenia patients.
Discuss with your practitioner about the same. you can consult me for any help required.

Hi
I understand your concern
Treatment is usually lifelong and often involves a combination of medications, psychotherapy and coordinated speciality care services.
While there may be no cure for schizophrenia, many people with this mental illness can lead healthy and productive lives depending upon the severity
Residual schizophrenia — delusions or hallucinations may go away, but motivation or interest in life is gone.
You can go for admission or yell history to your doctor who can initially give medication that can be mixed with food and once patient is stable you can take them for a visit
All the best

Schizophrenia is manageable. Comparing the positive outcome with the side effects it's negligible. Please continue the treatment.
Schizophrenia i s treatable(controllable) like diabetes and hypertension but not curable. If your mother is not willing to visit a psychiatrist/ doctor, you can request a home visit by a psychiatrist and get her treated.
Side effects are there but they can be taken care of.
Next Steps
Please request a home visit if your mother is not willing to visit a doctor
