IS YOUR CHEST PAIN ANGINA/ CARDIAC PAIN..?? Find it out yourself without any tests. Many people will take it with a pinch of salt or find it difficult to accept but its true. No test whatsoever is required to diagnose angina. No ECG, No ECHO. Yes its true, and i am saying it with full conviction. Q1. What tests do you do to diagnose angina.? Ans. No test is required. Angina or cardiac pain is a 100 percent clinical diagnosis. It is diagnosed by proper history taking and talking to the patient. Q2. How do you diagnose it.? Ans. We need to know the characterstics of chest pain. 1. Pain which is central in chest on the middle chest bone or occupying whole of chest 2. It is heaviness or constricting type 3. More often there is no pain but only uneasiness in chest 4. It typically increases on walking, exertion , climbing stairs and relieves on taking rest 5. It may radiate to both arms or jaw bone 6. It may be associated with breathlessness 7. May be associated with sweating / palpitation. 8. It usually relieves on taking sorbitrate If you are more than 50 years age and have any of the following A. You are a male B. diabetes C. smoker D. Hypertension then it is higher probability that your chest discomfort is angina. So if you have most of the above features , it is most probably angina , even if your ECG and ECHO are normal. Q3. What type of pain is unlikely to be angina Ans.First of all if you are young , healthy, female, non diabetic, non hypertensive, non smoker, no family history , it is very very unlikely that you will have angina pain. Any pain which is 1. More on the left side of chest 2. Localised to a point with finger 3. Last for only few seconds 4. Electric or current like sensation 5. Increases with left or right posture 6. Increases on touching 7. No relation with exertion If you have most of the above features then most likely your pain is not cardiac. Q4. What is the role of ECG, ECHO in diagnosing angina Ans. More often than not these tests are NORMAL in angina. so we do not depend on them to diagnose angina. ECG and ECHO is used only for corroborative evidence of heart disease. Q5. What are other causes of chest pain if it is not angina Ans. It can be anything other than heart pain. like A. Nerve pain due to vitamin deficiency B. Muscle spasm C. Anxiety.( undue fear of heart attack causes chest pain) Remember angina is totally a clinical diagnosis. It is diagnosed based on above characterstic features Dr. Himanshu yadav ( DM cardio)
