Ankylosing spondylitis affects the back, hips, neck and shoulder. It causes increasing stiffness of the joints, and if not treated properly, can result in loss of movements and pain in those regions. Pain is exarcerbated during winter/in cooler climate and during periods of stress. The best way to counteract it, other that proper medications, is to adopt a daily regime of exercise. Excercise should be aimed at maintaining flexibility of the joints and esp. the rib cage. Excercises suggested are swimming, yoga, breathing and stretching excercises, which help maintain an active lifestyle.
