Oxy level drop
Hello Dr. Does inhaling steam for 5 to 10 min results in drop of oxygen level? My mother is recovering from covid-19. She is on low dose of steroid 8mg followed by 4mg methylpred. Also taking blood thinner for 10 days. Her hrct score was 11/25. In recent x ray after 20 days she had b/l hila predominant. Now when she use steamer or inhaler for steam her oxy level drop from 98 to 94 for couple of seconds and return to normal gradually. Any serious issue?

No no , steam inhalation does not lower oxygen saturation. Check saturation properly: Keep index finger inside the oxymeter stable. Do not move the finger . See that your mother is at ease. Remove any nail polish as it may give false reading . Make her walk for 6 mins , and see the saturation drop. It should not drop more than 5%. If more than that , follow up! Stay safe.

Steam inhalation doesn’t lower oxygen level. This might a instrument issue or might be due to different hand positions. With regards.
