As a pediatrician, I’d emphasize the safety-first approach when choosing a mosquito repellent for a 9-month-old in India: Pediatrician-Recommended Guidelines 1. Avoid Direct Skin Contact with Chemicals For infants under 2 years, it's safest to use natural-based repellents and apply them only on clothes or surroundings, not on skin. DEET and picaridin-based products are not recommended at this age. 2. Choose Safer Options Natural Repellent Sprays: Sprays containing citronella, eucalyptus, or lemongrass oils can be used on clothing or surroundings, but avoid direct skin contact. 3. Physical Barriers Are Best Use mosquito nets over cribs and strollers. Dress your baby in long sleeves and pants. Keep windows and doors closed or screened. Use fans to keep air moving, as mosquitoes are weak fliers. 4. Special Cautions No essential oils directly on baby’s skin, even if labeled natural. Patch test any product on a small area of clothing before widespread use. Avoid sprays near the baby’s face and hands, as they might ingest or rub into their eyes. Suggested Routine At home: Use mosquito nets and fans, and avoid repellents unless mosquitoes are abundant. Outdoors or high mosquito-risk areas: Use fabric roll-ons or patches on clothing, and dress baby fully covered with light clothes.
