Mental health situation
My father had a piles operation in the month of September. After that some urinary retention issue aroused, doctor was consulted again, cystoscopy was done along with all other tests. Doctor soad him to take medicine for 2 months and the prob will be solved. He regularly took medicine for 2 months but he felt the condition was not improving and he got a disease which is incurable. He started having negative thoughts. We again consulted the doctor and he was admitted again cystoscopy, xray, ultrasound everything was done & report turn out to be good. He got more demotivated hearing about it. He does not want to go for check up anywhere else feeling he will not get cure. Doctor feels everything is normal in his body but he is not ready to believe that he is normal. He keep on saying that nobody understand me! Doctor make fun of my situation so there is nothing to be explained and sone further. So what can be done in this situation? Any help will be a great support

Given the history mentioned above, a lot of anxiety, rigid belief and possibility of influence of depression and mild dementia changes in his brain if he doesn’t have any history of psychiatric illness in past.
Next Steps
He needs to be consulted with a psychiatrist. SSRI, low dose antipsychotic and stimulant can do wonders. Also assessment other possible differentials should be kept in mind if no past history of psychiatric illness. With the given history likely illness anxiety/ depression with somatosensory preoccupation.

Don’t try to prove him wrong, that may only worsen his mood and behaviour may get agitated. At his level of perception and thought, he would feel that something is wrong with his health like a real fact. Thus countering him won’t be of any help.

If the doctor has said everything is normal and the patient continues to believe he has some illness, it can either be a rare illness or more commonly psychosomatic disorder for which you need to consult an astute psychiatrist and seek remedy. Good luck

Hypochondriac features are observed most of the time after major illness. Patient become worried about he is got some illness and dont get convinced he will need Councilling, support and medication.

Anybody in his state having a chronic problem , suffering everyday and not being taken seriously by doctors would get depressed. Just based on investigations being normal saying he is fine is not correct. Please find a urologist who is willing to take time to understand his problem and treat accordingly. Once his problem is fixed he should start to feel better.
If it is confirmed that there is no urinary retention anymore and he is only obsessing about his health, only then visit a psychiatrist for assessment

It appears to be illness anxiety if there is no evidence of any urological disorder. Illness anxiety can be treated through medications and therapy.
