Hello ! Persistent high count indicates that the infection is not under control . As far as treating infection is concerned four things need to taken care of - one is to find the site of infection, the organism causing the infection , the impact of the infection in the patient's body functioning as a whole and to detect the contributing cause for the infection, if any.If there is an infection identified in one particular site , we should not carried away by it.  We need to ensure there s no infection in any other site as well .   If your patient has a clear lung infection only then to identify the organism , sputum and blood can be sent for gram stain and culture sensitivity.  This test not only helps to identify the organism but also gives an idea as to what drugs are expected to work against it.  There can be factors for example like uncontrolled diabetes which can delay the clearing of infection in which case this needs to be also focused and taken care of.
