- A complete history to know the duration and an otoscopic ear examination is required to assess the size of the hole in the ear drum ( perforation). - Perforation may heal without a surgery within a few weeks to months of onset. - If it is of small size then sometimes it can be sealed by a paper patch with some chemical in the clinic without having to go for surgery. - if sufficient time has passed and it's not healed then surgery is required .
