Hiv transmission
30 days ago I had a risky exposure with someone which was protected. I had a cut from trimmimg at the start of pubic area 6-7 hours ago before exposure which condom did not covered. I tested for HIV 1&2 antigen p24 blood test 6 days ago which came back negative. I am concerned about the exposure, was the virus transmitted?

Dear Practo User, Since the exposure was protected, the risk of HIV transmission is already very low. A small trimming cut outside the area covered by the condom generally does not significantly increase the risk unless there was direct contact with infected blood or body fluids on an actively bleeding wound. Your HIV 1 & 2 with p24 antigen test done around 24 days after exposure coming negative is definitely reassuring. The 4th generation HIV test is highly reliable after 28 days and considered conclusive by most guidelines at 45 days. At present, there is no strong indication that the virus was transmitted based on the history you shared. To completely ease your anxiety, you may repeat the test at 45 days or 3 months as per standard protocol. Avoid excessive stress and repeated online searching, as anxiety after exposure is very common and can itself produce multiple physical symptoms.

The risk of HIV transmission in this situation appears very low because: The intercourse was protected with a condom, which greatly reduces HIV transmission risk. A small shaving/trimming cut in the pubic area that was 6–7 hours old is usually already beginning to clot and dry. HIV does not transmit easily through superficial skin cuts unless there is significant direct exposure to infected blood/body fluids. Your HIV 1 & 2 p24 antigen test at around 24 days after exposure being negative is reassuring. However, for a conclusive result: A 4th generation HIV test is considered highly reliable after 6 weeks Fully conclusive by 3 months in standard guidelines At present, based on the exposure described, the chance of transmission is extremely low and your negative test is encouraging. From what you described, the exposure appears to be low risk, especially because the intercourse was protected with a condom. A small trimming cut located at the pubic area (outside the area covered by the condom) generally does not become a common route for Human immunodeficiency virus infection transmission unless there was direct significant exposure of fresh infectious body fluid into an actively bleeding open wound. Superficial shaving or trimming cuts that are already several hours old usually begin clotting and forming a protective barrier relatively quickly. Also, the fact that your HIV p24 antigen test came back negative is reassuring. At around 24 days after exposure (if tested 6 days ago from a 30-day exposure), the result already provides encouraging information, although very early testing mainly helps reduce concern rather than completely ending anxiety for everyone psychologically. In many cases after a sexual exposure, the mind becomes trapped in repeated fear and over-analysis of every detail (“What about the cut?”, “What if something touched it?”, etc.), even when the practical medical risk remains low.
Next Steps
Try not to repeatedly inspect the area or search the internet for worst-case scenarios, as this commonly increases anxiety further. Since the exposure was protected and the cut was outside the condom-covered area and already several hours old, the overall transmission possibility appears low based on your description. Continue maintaining safe sexual practices in future encounters and avoid excessive stress regarding isolated low-risk exposures. If the anxiety is continuing to disturb your peace of mind, sleep, concentration, or daily functioning, then discussing it confidentially with a qualified healthcare professional can help provide reassurance and structured guidance. Health Tips
Use condoms consistently and correctly during sexual activity. Avoid shaving/trimming immediately before intercourse if possible. Maintain proper genital hygiene without over-irritating the skin. Avoid repeated internet searching about HIV symptoms. Focus on stress reduction, sleep, and overall mental well-being. Protected exposures with intact condom use are generally considered significantly lower risk for HIV transmission. Thank you
