Early HIV detection is done by two means - 1. By IgM and IgG antibody and p24 antigen detection which is positive after 15 - 20 days of infection. 2. Most sensitive is HIV viral load detection which can be positive as early as 5 days.
4 th generation test is p24 plus antibody ( 1) may not be conclusive in 1 st week.
Thats why it is best to fo both test ( 1 and 2 above) and if both are positive then it is very very unlikely to have false positive. If any discordance then we repeat after 1-2 weeks later.
