High TSH level 8
My wife (age 23yrs) was diagnosed with high TSH ( 9) 2 months ago. Since then she had thyroxine 25mg for a month (TSH came as 7) . Then doctor suggested thyronorm 50 mg . After having 50 mg for a month the TSH is still 8.4. What's wrong ? What should be the course of treatment.

TSH of 9 suggests subclinical hypothyroidism, Which may or may not be treated depending on symptoms and autoimmunity. Get her anti-TPO antibodies test done to rule out auto immunity. Thyroxin suppliment therapy is required. Dose of thyroxin depends on her weight. How many times she forget to take tab in a week ? Thyroxin has half life of 7 days. So if she forget any pill on a day she can take 2 pills next day. Normally it takes around 6-8 weeks to reflect change in TSH after dose ulteration. Let her continue taking 50mcg dose for 8 weeks and then repeat TSH. Dose increament is normally done in 12.5 to 25mcg but it is advisable to consult your diabetologist or endocrinologist before any increase in dosage.
