High blood glucose
My mother has been diagnosed with diabetes for the past 22 years. Last year, she started experiencing abdominal pain, which was found to be due to appendicitis. In February, she had surgery to remove her appendix. The biopsy showed LAMN. After the surgery, her glucose levels returned to normal. However, after some time, she began to experience pain in one leg, which was diagnosed as sciatica. Currently, she has experienced a lot of relief and is almost recovered. Her orthopedic doctor prescribed pregabalin to help with nerve repair for the sciatica. As soon as she started taking that medication, she began feeling low energy, and her blood glucose levels increased significantly. Her fasting blood sugar is approximately 270 mg/dL, and her post-meal levels are around 370 mg/dL. We are looking for ways to manage her diabetes and bring her glucose levels back to normal. She currently takes 30 units of lantus in morning and 15 units thrice a day of fiasp.

Pregaba do not increase blood sugar levels. Along with insulin she will need oral medication too plus dietary control. Consult a diabetologist and dietitian.

I'm sorry to hear about the health challenges your mother is facing. Managing diabetes, especially with other complicating factors like surgery and sciatica, can be quite complex. Here are some steps and considerations to help manage her diabetes and bring her blood glucose levels back to a more stable range: Medication Review: 1. Insulin Management: Your mother's current insulin regimen includes Lantus (long-acting) and Fiasp (fast-acting). Given her elevated glucose levels, it might be necessary to adjust her insulin doses. This should be done under the guidance of a doctor. They might consider: - Increasing the dosage of Lantus to provide a stronger basal insulin coverage. - Adjusting the doses of Fiasp, especially before meals, to better manage postprandial glucose spikes. Dietary Adjustments: 1. Low Glycemic Index Foods: Ensure her diet includes low glycemic index foods to help manage blood sugar levels. This includes whole grains, legumes, vegetables, and fruits that release glucose slowly into the bloodstream. 2. Carbohydrate Counting: Monitoring and managing carbohydrate intake can significantly impact blood glucose levels. 3. Regular Meal Timing: Ensure she eats at regular intervals to help prevent large fluctuations in blood glucose levels. Lifestyle Modifications: 1. Regular Physical Activity: Encouraging gentle, regular exercise such as walking can help improve insulin sensitivity and lower blood glucose levels. 2. Stress Management: Stress can impact blood glucose levels. Techniques such as yoga, meditation, or other relaxation exercises can be helpful. Addressing Sciatica: 1. Pain Management: Continuing to manage her sciatica pain effectively will help her maintain physical activity levels, which are beneficial for managing diabetes.
