Current antiviral medications for Hepatitis C (called DAAs — Direct-Acting Antivirals) are NOT recommended during pregnancy because their safety for the unborn baby has not been fully established. Treatment is typically deferred until after delivery. Similarly, during breastfeeding, these medications are generally avoided because they can pass into breast milk and their effect on the infant is unknown. The good news is that after completing breastfeeding, modern Hepatitis C treatment is very effective — over 95% cure rate with a short course. If there is severe liver disease involved during pregnancy, a specialist must assess risks urgently. The baby born to a Hepatitis C positive mother should be tested for HCV after 18 months of age.
