I had an emergency tooth extraction on December 26th. I was prescribed antibiotics which i took as prescribed. The past couple days I have been experiencing severe pain where my tooth was pulled and the pain is spreading up the right side of my head above where the molar was extracted and down the back of my neck. Should I visit the er or is this something typical that will go away? The molar was assessed before the extraction.

If you did not have pain for almost a month after removal of molar, the chances of having an infection or remaining tooth part are slim.
Of course, it is a wise plan to rule that out with a simple intraoral Xray.
Current literature shows that such orofacial pain can be experienced by a few. In case you don't find a cause after the Xray, please consult a Orofacial pain consultant (rare but can be found!)

Health Tips
Don't do any irreparable treatment unless clear-cut diagnosis is obtained.
Contact your dentist and inform him about this matter. Get an IOPA (radiograph) taken of that area. It may be because of a left over root tip, or infected tooth beside the extracted one. Only by taking a radiograph can we know for sure.
Health Tips
Take Ketorol DT tablet thrice daily after food for the next few days and take Pan D capsule twice daily half an hour before food for the same duration. The first dose of Ketorol DT, take 2 tablets together at a time, and then take 1 tablet subsequently.
