A blue painful lump on the MCP joint can be concerning, as it may indicate a number of conditions such as a cyst, infection, or gout. A medical evaluation by a healthcare professional is recommended to determine the exact cause of the lump and to provide appropriate treatment. In the meantime, you can try using a cold compress to reduce pain and swelling. This can be done by wrapping ice or a cold pack in a towel and applying it to the affected area for 10-15 minutes at a time, several times a day. Avoid applying ice directly to the skin, as this can cause frostbite. If the lump is due to an infection, warm compresses may be recommended instead to help promote drainage of the infection. However, it is important to have the lump evaluated by a healthcare professional before trying any treatment on your own, as some treatments may worsen certain conditions.
